Clinical Laboratory Testing
False positives don’t just waste reagents – they trigger unnecessary treatment, patient anxiety, and regulatory scrutiny. When you’re running COVID diagnostics or pathogen screening, a PCR enclosure with UV decontamination between runs eliminates the cross-contamination that creates false positives.

Forensic DNA Analysis
Chain of custody matters. A contaminated DNA sample can invalidate months of investigative work. PCR safety cabinets designed for forensic labs provide documented contamination control that survives courtroom scrutiny.

Where PCR Hoods Don’t Belong
High-Containment Pathogen Work
Work with dangerous infectious agents requires biosafety cabinets with HEPA exhaust and negative pressure
BSL-3/BSL-4 Applications
Select agents and high-consequence pathogens need fully ducted BSL-3 or BSL-4 facilities
Situations Requiring Negative Pressure
If your protocol requires negative pressure containment, you need a biosafety cabinet, not a PCR hood

Situations Requiring Negative Pressure

We won’t compromise your safety or regulatory compliance for a sale. PCR workstations are NOT appropriate for:
- BSL-3 or BSL-4 pathogen work (these require negative pressure biosafety cabinets).
- Select agents or high-consequence pathogens.
- Any work requiring documented negative pressure containment.
- Radioactive materials.
- Applications where aerosol containment (rather than contamination prevention) is the primary concern.
The Real Cost of Contamination
A contaminated PCR run doesn’t just cost you the price of reagents. It costs you everything downstream.
The technician cost:
- False positives send techs chasing ghosts – re-running controls, cleaning, recalibrating, changing reagents, maybe sterilizing the entire workspace.
- One bad run contaminates surfaces, pipettes, and reagents. Everything stops until you find and eliminate the source.
- Every re-test replaces a new test. A single contamination event can halve daily capacity for days.
- Protocol fatigue sets in. Techs become overly cautious, slowing every subsequent run while they second-guess their technique.
- Lost data integrity. Once contamination appears, you can’t trust previous runs. Some labs invalidate days or weeks of data because the “when” is uncertain.
The patient cost:
- False positive results. A patient told they have a pathogen they don’t have. That’s anxiety, unnecessary treatment, possibly isolation or stigma.
- False negatives from inhibition or cleanup mix-ups. The patient who actually has a disease goes untreated longer. In infectious disease testing, that delay fuels outbreaks.
- Regulatory fallout. CLIA, CAP, or ISO-accredited labs must log and investigate every contamination event. Too many unexplained positives puts accreditation on the line.
- Public health implications. In outbreak surveillance labs, false positives trigger unnecessary contact tracing and resource diversion.
The business cost:
- Lost productivity. Techs pulled off productive work to troubleshoot. Throughput and revenue drop.
- Audit exposure. Each contamination incident requires a CAPA report. Those pile up.
- Delayed turnaround time. Clients or physicians start complaining.
- Burned reagents. Thousands in enzymes, tips, and consumables scrapped during cleanup.
- Trust erosion. Clinical clients or research partners lose faith in your data.
- Brand damage. A pattern of contamination equals whispers of “their lab can’t keep things clean.”
- Lost contracts. Pharma, CRO, and hospital labs quietly blacklist vendors who send contaminated reagents or unreliable results.
- Downstream harm. In biotech, one false dataset can derail an entire R&D program or clinical submission.
Your PCR hood cost is an insurance policy against all of that.
How Erlab PCR Workstations Prevent Contamination
|
HEPA/ULPA Particulate Filtration |
External air passes through HEPA H14 (99.995% efficiency) or ULPA U16 (99.99995% efficiency) filters before entering your workspace. Particles larger than 0.1 μm - including aerosolized DNA, dust, skin cells, and environmental contaminants - are captured before they reach your samples. |
|
UV Sterilization Between Runs |
A 254-nm germicidal UV lamp decontaminates the work surface between handling operations. This prevents cross-contamination from one sample set to the next - the most common source of false positives in busy clinical labs. |
|
Vertical Laminar Flow |
Clean, filtered air flows vertically down across your workspace, creating a positive pressure barrier that prevents unfiltered room air from reaching your samples. Work at the front of the cabinet without compromising protection at the back. |
|
Optional Molecular Filtration |
An optional molecular filter protects your PCR setup from VOCs present in laboratory air - particularly important in labs where solvent work or chemical storage creates background contamination. |
|
Real-Time Filter Monitoring |
An integrated anemometer monitors filter saturation and notifies you when replacement is required - before contamination risk increases. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Contamination Prevention & Performance
How do PCR hoods prevent contamination?
Multi-layer protection. HEPA or ULPA filters remove 99.995% to 99.99995% of particles from incoming air (including aerosolized DNA). Vertical laminar flow creates positive pressure that prevents room air from reaching your samples. UV sterilization decontaminates the work surface between runs, preventing cross-contamination.
Will this eliminate all false positives?
No PCR hood eliminates contamination from poor technique - contaminated pipettes, aerosol-generating tube handling, or improper reagent storage. But it eliminates contamination from external sources (room air, previous samples, dust) that cause the majority of false positives in shared lab spaces.
What about horizontal flow vs. vertical flow?
Erlab PCR workstations use vertical laminar flow, where filtered air flows down from the top across your work surface. This protects samples throughout the workspace while allowing you to work comfortably at the front of the cabinet. Horizontal flow pushes air toward the operator, which can blow contamination back into your face.
Can I use this for RNA work?
Yes. PCR hoods are ideal for RNA extraction and handling. The filtered environment prevents RNase contamination from skin, dust, and environmental sources. Many RNA labs use UV sterilization between runs as standard protocol.
What filtration standard do these meet?
EN 1822-1, which defines HEPA and ULPA filter classifications. Our HEPA H14 filters deliver 99.995% efficiency for particles >0.1 μm. Our ULPA U16 filters deliver 99.99995% efficiency at the same size. Both exceed the particle capture needed for PCR contamination control.
Installation & Facilities
Do I need special electrical or ventilation?
Just standard electrical outlets (115V or 230V depending on model). No external ventilation, ductwork, or HVAC modifications required. No make-up air systems needed.
How long does installation take?
Typically 2-4 hours. ValiPass includes delivery, setup, performance verification, and workflow training. You're operational the same day.
Can I move the workstation later?
Yes. The mobile PCR hood design means you can relocate as lab needs change - to a different bench, room, or even building. Unplug, roll it to the new location, plug it back in.
What if I'm in a leased building?
Perfect application. Because PCR cabinets don't require ductwork or building modifications, you can install them in leased facilities without landlord approval or construction. When your lease ends, the equipment moves with you.
Filters & Maintenance
How often do filters need replacement?
Depends on your usage volume and environment. The integrated anemometer monitors filter saturation and notifies you when replacement is needed - typically every 12-24 months for particulate filters. UV lamps typically last 9,000 hours (about 3 years of 8-hour daily use).
What happens if my testing protocols change?
Through ValiGuard, we'll reassess your needs at no charge. This might mean adjusted maintenance schedules, different pre-filter options, or adding molecular filtration if you're now working with volatile compounds. If your new protocol requires different equipment, we'll tell you honestly.
How hard is filter replacement?
Filters are designed for quick replacement without contaminating your workspace. Most users complete filter changes in under 10 minutes following the documented procedure. Training is included in ValiPass.
What about UV lamp safety?
UV sterilization runs between handling operations, not while you're working. The system prevents UV activation when the cabinet is in use. The 254-nm germicidal wavelength is effective for surface decontamination but the lamps are only active during programmed decontamination cycles.
Applications & Workflow
Can I use this for PCR setup and post-PCR analysis?
Only for pre-PCR work (sample prep, reagent preparation, reaction setup). Never use the same PCR hood for pre- and post-PCR work. Amplicons from post-PCR analysis will contaminate everything. If you need to handle post-PCR samples, dedicate a separate workspace or hood to post-PCR only.
What about COVID testing specifically?
PCR workstations are widely used for COVID-19 testing workflows, particularly for sample extraction and reaction setup. The combination of HEPA filtration and UV decontamination helps prevent the false positives that plagued many high-throughput COVID testing labs.
Can multiple users share one PCR workstation?
Yes, but establish clear protocols. Run UV decontamination between users. Implement workflow discipline (one-way flow from reagents to samples to waste). Consider using our app-based management system to log usage and track which user had which contamination events if they occur.
What if I'm running multiple different assays?
PCR contamination hood is excellent for this. UV decontamination between assays prevents cross-contamination. Just maintain strict workflow discipline - always work from low-copy to high-copy samples, and decontaminate between different targets.
PCR Hood Cost & Value
What's the total cost of ownership?
Your investment includes the PCR enclosure, professional installation (ValiPass), and lifetime support (ValiGuard). Ongoing costs are filter replacement and UV lamp replacement. Compare this to the cost of a single contamination event - lost productivity, burned reagents, delayed results, and regulatory investigation.
Is financing available?
Yes. We offer short-term financing, long-term financing, SLED lease programs (for state, local government, and education), deferred payment, and cash flow recovery options.
What about warranty?
Standard warranty included. Register your warranty (takes less than 2 minutes) and extend protection by 10 years. Every time you replace your filter through Erlab, your warranty extends by an additional year.
How does this compare to building a dedicated PCR room?
A dedicated PCR room requires construction, HVAC modification, cleanroom-grade finishes, and often months of planning and permitting. Costs typically run $50,000-$200,000+. A PCR workstation costs a fraction of that, installs in hours, and provides comparable contamination control for individual workspaces.
Compliance & Documentation
What documentation do I get for validation?
ValiPass includes performance verification data, filter certification, training records, and operational procedures. We provide documentation packages suitable for CLIA, CAP, ISO, and GLP compliance.
Do I need to validate this myself?
No. Our technicians perform initial validation during ValiPass installation. You'll receive documented performance verification. Your quality team may want to add periodic performance checks to your PM schedule, and we'll provide guidance on what to monitor.
Can this be used in an ISO-certified lab?
Yes. Many ISO 15189, ISO 17025, and ISO 13485 labs use Erlab PCR workstations. We provide the documentation your quality system requires. The EN 1822-1 filter certification and performance verification data support your validation requirements.
When PCR Hoods Aren’t the Answer
When is a biosafety cabinet the better choice?
If you're working with infectious agents that require containment (not just contamination prevention), you need a biosafety cabinet. BSCs provide negative pressure and HEPA-filtered exhaust to protect the operator and environment, not just the sample. For BSL-2 or higher work, always use a biosafety cabinet.
What if I need a full cleanroom?
For large-scale manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, or situations where entire rooms need controlled classification, a cleanroom is appropriate. PCR workstations provide localized clean air for individual workspaces - they're not a replacement for facility-wide cleanroom design.
Will Erlab recommend other solutions if PCR hoods won't work?
Yes. If a PCR workstation won't solve your contamination problem, we'll say so. Your sample integrity matters more than any sale. We can suggest reputable biosafety cabinet manufacturers or cleanroom designers when appropriate.
Ready to Take Risk Out Of Your PCR Workflow?
Whether you’re expanding COVID testing capacity, setting up a new molecular biology lab, or finally addressing that recurring contamination problem, let’s determine if our PCR workstation technology fits your application. As the leading manufacturer of laboratory PCR hoods since 1968, we’ll provide an honest assessment.
No obligations. No sales pressure. Just honest assessment of whether a PCR hood matches your workflow, your facility, and your contamination risks.
